Afghan airstrikes kill 11 militants in southern province

KANDAHAR, Afghanistan, Aug. 18 (Xinhua) -- Up to 11 militants loyal to the armed Taliban group were killed following a series of Afghan forces airstrikes in the country's southern province of Kandahar on Saturday, police spokesman in the restive province Abdul Bashir Khaksar said.

The air raids took place at around 4:00 a.m. local time when a militants' hideout was targeted in Malang Kariz area of Maiwand district in the province, resulting in the death of at least 11 militants, the official said.

According to the source, three explosive-packed vans belonging to the hardliner Taliban militants have also been targeted and destroyed in the bombings.

The Taliban militants have not commented.
