NEW DELHI, Aug. 23 (Xinhua) -- At least three people were killed and more than 37 others injured after a private passenger bus overturned in the eastern Indian state of Jharkhand on Thursday, police said.

The accident occurred in the state's East Singhbhum district.

"The bus carrying some 40 people skidded off the road and turned turtle after its driver lost control of the speeding vehicle. While one person died on the spot, two others succumbed to their injuries on way to the hospital," a police official said.

The injured are being treated in the same hospital, he added.

The bus was going to Raxaul in the neighboring state of Bihar when the accident happened.

"A probe has been ordered into the incident," the official said, adding that the driver has been booked for rash and negligent driving. "He will be questioned once he is out of hospital."

Road accidents occur in India mainly due to poor driving and bad roads.
