NEW DELHI, Aug. 24 (Xinhua) -- At least four people were killed and three others injured after their sports utility vehicle (SUV) skidded off a mountain road and rolled down a gorge in the northern Indian state of Himachal Pradesh, police said Friday.

The accident occurred at Dona in Nankhari, more than 100 kms from state capital Shimla.

"The SUV carrying the seven people plunged into the deep gorge after its driver lost control of the vehicle while negotiating a sharp bend late Thursday night. Four died on the spot while the injured have been hospitalised," local police chief Omapati Jamwal told the media.

A probe has been ordered into the incident, the official said. "The driver has been booked for rash and negligent driving. We will question him once he is out of hospital."

The accident came a day after another SUV veered off the road and fell into a gorge near Rohtang Pass on a highway connecting the state's resort town of Manali with Indian-controlled Kashmir, which killed 11 people.

India has the highest number of road fatalities in the world. Road accidents occur mostly due to poor driving or badly maintained roads and vehicles.
