KAMPALA, Aug. 27 (Xinhua) -- A court in northern Uganda on Monday granted bail to three lawmakers and scores of their supporters who are facing treason charges over an attack on the president's convoy.

Gulu Resident Judge Stephen Mubiru granted bail to Robert Ssentamu Kyagulanyi, Paul Mwiru, Gerald Karuhanga and dozens of their supporters after presenting sureties.

"Their bail application is allowed. Each of them (suspects) is to execute a non-cash bond of 5 million shillings (about 1,350 U.S. dollars). Each of the sureties as well is to execute a non-cash bond of 10 million shillings (2,700 dollars)," Mubiru said at a televised court hearing.

The suspects are expected to reappear before the Gulu Chief Magistrate Court on Thursday.

The 33 suspects are facing charges of treason over alleged intention to harm President Yoweri Museveni in the northwestern district of Arua.

It is alleged that on Aug. 13, the suspects and others still at large in Arua municipality obstructed and violently attacked by stoning one of the vehicles in the presidential convoy.
