RABAT, Aug. 28 (Xinhua) -- Morocco's Health Ministry announced on Tuesday that no cholera case was reported in the country, stressing that measures have been taken to prevent any possible outbreak of the epidemic.

In a statement issued following the outbreak of cholera cases in neighboring Algeria, the Moroccan ministry recalled that no case of the disease has been reported in the kingdom since 1997, thanks to the fight against water-borne diseases and the progress made in the areas of drinking water supply and sewage treatment.

The ministry said that preventive measures have been taken through the reinforcement of epidemiological surveillance and control measures, particularly at airports that serve passengers coming from countries where cholera cases have been reported, the statement pointed out.

The measures also include support for hospital laboratories in the microbiological investigations and the supply of drugs and equipment for the treatment of diseases, while providing citizens with a hot line for more information.

The ministry also said that it coordinates its efforts with various relevant government departments in the areas of food safety, drinking water and sanitation system.

Algerian health authorities had already confirmed two deaths since the cholera outbreak.

Statistics by Algeria's Health Ministry showed that 56 cholera cases have been confirmed out of 161 hospitalized cases since Aug. 7.
