TOKYO, Aug. 31 (Xinhua) -- Tokyo stocks closed lower Friday with the benchmark Nikkei stock index snapping an eight-day winning streak, as reports U.S. President Donald Trump may move to slap fresh tariffs on Chinese goods weighed on market sentiment.

The 225-issue Nikkei Stock Average shed 4.35 points, or 0.02 percent, from Thursday to close the day at 22,865.15.

The broader Topix index of all First Section issues on the Tokyo Stock Exchange, meanwhile, lost 3.79 points, or 0.22 percent, to finish at 1,735.35.

Oil and coal product, insurance, and iron and steel-oriented issues comprised notable decliners by the close of play.
