Canadian stock market continues down

TORONTO, Aug. 31 (Xinhua) -- Canada's main stock market dropped on Friday.

The Toronto Stock Exchange's benchmark Standard & Poor's/TSX Composite Index fell 108.67 points, or 0.66 percent, to conclude the day at 16,262.88 points.

The Canadian dollar edged down 0.39 cents to 0.76.63 U.S. dollar.

The energy group fell 2.9 points, or 1.44 percent while the financials sector slipped 2.03 points, or 0.65 percent.

Canadian Natural Resources fell 1.7 percent to 44.64 Canadian dollars while Cenovus Energy lost 2.2 percent to 12.08 Canadian dollars.

Canadian Tire declined 1.4 percent to 163 Canadian dollars while Gildan Activewear slid 1.3 percent to 38.36 Canadian dollars.

Among the largest percentage gainers on the market were Aphria Inc, which jumped 5.4 percent to 16.88 Canadian dollars while Canopy Growth rose 3.4 percent to 59.63 Canadian dollars.

Shopify added 1.1 percent to 190.08 Canadian dollars while Constellation Software climbed 2.89 percent to 994.89 Canadian dollars.
