DAR ES SALAAM, Sept. 8 (Xinhua) -- The number of people killed in a grisly road accident in southern highlands of Tanzania went up to 15, authorities said on Saturday.

At least 13 people were killed on Friday evening in the east African nation's southern highland region of Mbeya in an accident that involved five vehicles, including a mini-bus, two fuel tankers and two lorries ferrying potatoes.

Petro Seme, the chief nursing officer of the Mbeya Zonal Referral Hospital, said two more people died on Saturday while receiving treatment at the hospital.

He said: "We received 13 bodies of people who died on the spot and two others lost their lives while receiving treatment today (Saturday). Two more victims are in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU)."

"Four victims have been discharged while several others continue to receive treatment," said Seme.

Urlich Matei, Mbeya Regional Police Commander, said the accident occurred at Igawilo, between Igoma and Mbeya city, involving five vehicles, including a mini-bus, two fuel tankers and two lorries ferrying potatoes.

Matei said the accident occurred after one of the lorries ferrying potatoes developed problems in its brake system and crashed on the other vehicles, ending on top of the minibus.

On July 1 this year, 20 people were killed and 45 others injured in a road accident in Mbeya region.
