TRIPOLI, Sept. 8 (Xinhua) -- Commander of Libya's eastern-based army, General Khalifa Haftar, on Saturday warned that the army would "act" in case the upcoming elections are unfair.
"The commander fully supports the elections, but they must be fair elections," said the army spokesman Ahmad al-Mismari in a statement on his official Facebook page. "If that is not the case, the army will act."
Haftar stressed that the army is not alone and that it might align support from other parties, al-Mismari said.
The spokesman did not specify whether the "act" means a military operation to control the capital Tripoli.
France hosted in May a meeting on Libya with the participation of different Libyan parties to end the political crisis in the country.
Following the 2011 uprising that toppled former leader Gaddafi's regime, Libya has been suffering escalating violence, chaos and political division.
