WUHAN, Sept. 16 (Xinhua) -- A number of intelligent systems in residential communities, using facial recognition technology and linked with police Web of Things, have been built in central China's city of Wuhan.
Li Zhiqiang, a police officer with the municipal public security bureau, said that the city of over 10 million people had 16 large residential communities built with the smart systems. By the end of the year, the number will rise to 100.
Liu Sijie living in Bairuijing Community in downtown Wuhan, capital of Hubei Province, said she heard the community used to have a high crime rate, and was worried about her safety when she rented an apartment last year.
"I worried most about burglary. With the new tech system, I feel much safer," Liu said.
At the doorway, the system has a built-in camera that can unlock doors using facial recognition. The system is linked with the police web, which uses big data to analyze facial images with documents in its database, giving alerts when detecting suspicious faces.
In the police station near Bairuijing Community, the intelligent system's central desk with a holographic management platform can show real-time images caught by 283 security monitors and 27 elevator monitors in the community of 10,000 residents.
Hu Bin, a local police officer, said the system had helped police work by automatically analyzing images to check for wanted fugitives and suspected burglars. It also gives alerts when power consumption is too high or smoke and fire risks are detected.
He said police used the platform to track activities of former convicts and potential crimes. It is also effective in collecting evidence for crime detection.
Wuhan is accelerating security surveillance. Li said the number of public security video surveillance cameras in communities is expected to rise 1 million, to 1.5 million the next year.
