HAVANA, Sept. 16 (Xinhua) -- Cuban President Miguel Diaz-Canel on Sunday said the main goal of his government is boosting links with the people, listening to their concerns and addressing their difficulties.

In an interview with Latin American network TeleSUR, Diaz-Canel said his administration advocates the notion of "governing for the people."

"There has to be a constant link and dialogue with the people," he said.

Diaz-Canel, who has visited several provinces and directly interacted with Cubans, said that government leaders at all levels must respond to the people's needs.

He also emphasized efforts to communicate with the youth and listen to their concerns and aspirations.

Diaz-Canel said it's important to strengthen ties between the central and local governments.

"We want to give provinces and municipal governments greater autonomy because they truly know the local concerns and problems and can solve them easier," he said.

The interview with TeleSUR is the first one with an international media outlet after Diaz-Canel was elected president of Cuba in April.
