NAIROBI, Sept. 20 (Xinhua) -- Kenyan police on Thursday dawn raided a private residence in the coastal county of Kilifi and seized 92 kilograms of heroin valued at 1.5 million U.S. dollars.

The officers said they were acting on intelligence on the presence of the narcotics at the house.

The narcotics had been kept in bags and seemed to have been earmarked for transit at the time of the seizure.

Police said the owners of the house were not present at the time of the raid.

The seizure was described as huge given there has been a lull in such operations despite high consumption of narcotics in the coast region.

Kenyan police have mounted operations against drug trafficking and consumption in the past months in efforts to eradicate the menace.

Cases of drug trafficking have been on the rise in Kenya even as most traffickers avoid the mainly used routes to carry out their criminal enterprise.

Police said they now use roads as opposed to airports to carry out their business. The most commonly trafficked narcotics from Tanzania and through Uganda is heroin. Cocaine is also trafficked from the two countries.
