RABAT, Sept. 20 (Xinhua) -- The number of passengers in Moroccan airports reached 14.8 million during the first eight months of 2018, up 10.5 percent year on year, the Moroccan Airports Authority (ONDA) said Thursday.
Between January and August, 6.5 million passengers travelled through Morocco's largest airport, the Mohammed V airport, representing some 44 percent of the total number of the passengers, ONDA statistics said.
Meanwhile, the Marrakech-Menara airport received 3.3 million passengers, while Al Massira airport in the city of Agadir recorded 1.2 million passengers.
In August alone, Morocco's airports posted an air traffic volume of 2.28 million passengers, compared to 2.2 million in the same month of 2017.
Typically, tourism and travel in Morocco reaches its peak in the summer, especially religious tourism. Many pilgrims travel to Mecca for Hajj and many Moroccans living abroad return home for Eid Al-Adha, leading to increase in the air traffic.
In 2017, air traffic in Morocco grew 11.63 percent to a record high of more than 20.35 million people.
