NEW YORK, Sept. 24 (Xinhua) -- U.S. stocks opened lower on Monday as investors kept a close eye on the latest development of trade tensions between the United States and its key trading partners.

Shortly after the opening bell, the Dow Jones Industrial Average slid 72.63 points, or 0.27 percent, to 26,670.87. The S&P 500 was down 9.43 points, or 0.32 percent, to 2,920.24. The Nasdaq Composite Index fell 50.29 points, or 0.63 percent, to 7,936.66.

Shares of Boeing and Caterpillar, companies with high overseas revenue exposure, decreased 1.1 percent and 0.59 percent, respectively, in early trading.

Fears that an escalation of trade frictions between Washington and its key trading partners may have negative impact on the global economy continued to rattle investors, analysts noted.

U.S. stocks reported mixed results in the week ending Sept. 21 as investors digested a batch of economic data amid global trade tensions.

The Dow and the S&P 500 advanced 2.25 percent and 0.85 percent, respectively, while the Nasdaq declined 0.29 percent.
