ABUJA, Sept. 28 (Xinhua) -- Nigerian police on Friday confirmed an attack in which at least nine people were killed by gunmen in the city of Jos, state capital of Plateau in the central part of the country.

The police said an investigation has been launched to apprehend the gunmen who opened fire on local residents late Thursday in north district of Jos.

Terna Tyopev, a spokesman for Plateau police, told Xinhua that the gunmen struck during a heavy downpour in the area.

According to Tyopev, at least nine people were killed, and several others sustained injuries of various degrees during the attack.

The police rescued some residents who fled their homes during the attack, he said.

Local residents said the gunmen suddenly entered the area and started shooting indiscriminately at the people.

Meanwhile, the Plateau state government on Friday imposed a dusk-to-dawn curfew in the city due to the latest and previous attacks.

Richard Tokma, acting secretary of the state government, who announced the curfew, simply cited "security reports" for the government's decision.

On September 2, at least 11 people were killed and 12 others wounded following an attack in south area of Jos.

The Plateau state, located in Nigeria's middle belt where the Muslim-dominated north and the Christian-majority south meet, has witnessed constant rifts between locals and Fulani herdsmen. Many, including women and children, have been murdered in previous attacks.
