TRIPOLI, Oct. 2 (Xinhua) -- Metiga international airport of the Libyan capital Tripoli resumed work on Tuesday a few hours after an armed group targeted it with shells.
In a video posted on Facebook, the armed group called itself "Tripoli Youth Movement" and claimed responsibility for the shelling.
The group said the reason for the attack was to "expel the Special Deterrence Force occupying the airport" of the Interior Ministry. It also threatened to "defeat and expel the Force's commander Abdarraoof Cara."
In 2018, Tripoli's only functioning airport was closed several times due to shelling, the last of which was later in September during the violence in the city between forces allied with the government and other armed groups.
The violence killed and injured hundreds of people, mostly civilians, and forced many families to flee their homes.
The fighting ended a few days ago with an agreement signed by the warring parties, according to the Ministry of Interior.
Libya has been suffering insecurity and escalating violence since the fall of former leader Muammar Gaddafi's regime in 2011.
