RABAT, Oct. 3 (Xinhua) -- The energy chief of the Arab League (AL) said on Wednesday that the rate of access to electricity in the Arab world has exceeded 86 percent.

Jamila Yousef Matar, director of energy management for the League of Arab States, made the announcement during his presentation at the ongoing 11th Arab Energy Conference held in the Moroccan city of Marrakech.

However, she highlighted a wide disparity in the rate of connection to the electricity network among Arab nations.

Access to electricity has reached 100 percent in the Gulf Cooperation Council countries, while it remains low in other nations, Matar said.

The demand for electricity is growing rapidly in the Arab world, at a annual rate of 5 to 8 percent, she noted.

The AL energy chief also presented the results of the study on the integrated electricity supply system for the power grids of the Arab countries.

The Arab Common Electricity Market project will enter the new phase next year, with annual economic revenues estimated at 127 billion U.S. dollars by 2038.

In 2017, 14 Arab countries signed in in Egypt's capital Cairo a Memorandum of Understanding to create an Arab common market for electricity.
