RABAT, Oct. 13 (Xinhua) -- The Moroccan royal navy rescued Friday 165 suspected illegal immigrants off the Mediterranean city of Nador, Morocco's army said Saturday.

The migrants were carried by several inflatable boats heading to Spain, the army noted.

A total of 140 among the migrants are from sub-Saharan African nations, including 15 women, while 25 are Moroccans, it pointed out.

All the migrants were brought safely to Nador Port, the army said.

In one week, the Moroccan navy arrested more than 1,200 migrants off the country's northern coasts.

In recent months, Morocco has been witnessing a significant hike in illegal immigration attempts.

The Moroccan government said its security services have thwarted at least 54,000 attempts to smuggle illegal immigrants into Europe in the first eight months of 2018, compared with 39,000 attempts a year earlier.
