6 killed, 20 injured in road accident in India

NEW DELHI, Oct. 16 (Xinhua) -- At least six people were killed and 20 injured Tuesday after a bus carrying them fell into a canal in eastern Indian state of West Bengal, police said.

The accident took place near Gojarmore in Hoogly district about 47 km north of Kolkata, the capital city of West Bengal.

"This morning a Kolkata-bound passenger bus hit the cement railings of a bridge and fell into Dakatia khal canal here," a police official said. "Three people were killed on spot and three others succumbed to their injuries in hospital."

According to officials, 20 people were injured in the accident.

Police said the injured were admitted to the nearest Haripal hospital.

Following the accident, locals and police rushed to the scene to carry out rescue work.

Deadly road accidents are common in India due to overloading, bad condition of roads and reckless driving.

An official report said an average 400 deaths take place every day in India due to road accidents.
