KITALE, Kenya, Oct. 17 (Xinhua) -- Authorities on Wednesday arrested three suspected poachers and recovered six pieces of elephant tusk weighing 64 kg in northwestern Kenya.

Adan Alio, assistant director for Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS) Western Conservation Area, said a KWS team trailed the suspects after receiving information from a member of the public.

"KWS team arrested three suspects and recovered six pieces of elephant tusk weighing 64 kilos in Makutano trading center on Wednesday," Alio told Xinhua. "The incident took place as a result of information our team were following up for the last three weeks."

The official said the ivories recovered have a street value of 0.6 million U.S. dollars. The suspects are from west Pokot and Bungoma counties.

The ivories could be from West Pokot County, where two elephants were killed late last year, Alio said.
