LAGOS, Oct. 18 (Xinhua) -- Nigeria's medical association on Thursday condemned the recent murder of an International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) worker in northeast in Borno.
Obitade Obimakinde, spokesperson for the Nigerian Medical Association, said in a statement the association considered the killing of the worker as a despicable act which has a devastating effect on humanity.
The female worker had been in captivity since she was abducted by a faction of Boko Haram in March this year, alongside other two ICRC aid workers.
The three aid workers were working at a hospital supported by the ICRC in a displacement camp in a remote town in Borno State, the long-time stronghold of Boko Haram.
The ICRC aid worker was the second abducted humanitarian worker to be murdered in Nigeria within one month.
While appreciating the efforts of the government, the association however urged the government to step up efforts in the areas of security of lives and property, especially of those offering humanitarian services across the country.
The spokesperson added that adequate and proactive security measures would have prevented the acts of terrorism and kidnapping embarked upon by the dreaded Boko Haram insurgents.
