ABUJA, Nov. 1 (Xinhua) -- The Nigerian Army on Wednesday confirmed that the body of a missing general has been recovered from an abandoned well in central Nigeria after he was declared missing on Sept. 3.

Major General Idris Alkali, the immediate past chief of administration at the army headquarters in Abuja, was on a trip to the northeastern state of Bauchi when he was reportedly attacked and Nigeriankilled by unknown persons in the south of Jos, capital of the central Plateau State.

His body was recovered in the Guchwet area of Jos after a weeks-long search operation, the army said in a statement.

The army said that after a thorough investigation, they narrowed their search to a mining pond in the south of Jos. The general's car was found and recovered from the pond after two weeks of draining.

The army said its troops were led to the location by one of those arrested earlier in connection with the case.
