TRIPOLI, Nov. 4 (Xinhua) -- Deputy Commander of the Security Force of Libyan city Sirte, Ali Erfeda, on Sunday was severely injured in an assassination attempt by unknown gunmen in Libya's western city of Khoms.

Taha Hadid, the security force spokesman, said that the deputy commander was rushed to hospital.

Hadid confirmed that security services of Khoms started an urgent investigation into the incident to find out those responsible.

The UN-backed government formed the Sirte Security Force to fight against the Islamic State militants in the city of Sirte, which is located some 450 km east of the capital Tripoli.

The government forces took control of the coastal city and defeated the terrorists in December 2016 after nearly eight months of fierce fighting.
