BANJUL, Nov. 9 (Xinhua) -- The first attempt to explore oil and gas in The Gambia went unsuccessful after the three weeks preliminary drilling exercise finds nothing in the wells, an official statement said on Friday.
However, the statement indicated the geological assessment, which is led by Australian based Far and Petronas, has shown an indication of the presence of key components of hydrocarbons.
"The prospect of finding oil and gas in the first offshore exploration has been unsuccessful," the State House said, adding that "the geological assessments of the drilled well have indicated the presence of all the key components of hydrocarbons."
According to the statement, an approval for a six-month extension to allow Far and Petronas to do a thorough evaluation of the results.
In 2017, the oil company announced the completion of its detailed geotechnical studies and assessed significant hydrocarbon potential in two blocks. Enditem
