LONDON, Nov. 13 (Xinhua) -- Premier League clubs are to discuss plans to reduce the number of foreign players in their squads to deal with the Brexit, according to reports in the UK media.
Premier League teams are currently allowed 17 players in their 25-man first team squads, but a plan put forward by the Football Association would see that number reduced to 12 with 13 'homegrown' players, will be on the table at a meeting of the 20 clubs on Thursday.
The Premier League has issued a statement reading, "Like many other organizations dependent on a combination of domestic and international talent, we are waiting to better understand what the political and regulatory landscape will be after the UK leaves the European Union.
"Access to talented footballers from across Europe has played a key part in the growth of the Premier League, with match attendance and global interest increasing significantly as high-quality foreign players have taken their place in the competition with and against the best British and Irish players."
The free movement of labor within the European Union currently means there is no limit of EU players in England, but following the UK's exit from the European Union at the end of March 2019, it is thought the Home Office could insist European players coming to the UK fulfil the strict conditions which currently apply to non-EU footballers.
