LONDON, Nov. 14 (Xinhua) -- British Prime Minister Theresa May is expected to make a statement late Wednesday after the ongoing cabinet meeting in Downing Street discussing the new Brexit deal between London and Brussels.

May is expected to update the progress in the Brexit process which culminated in a draft withdrawal agreement reached by Britain and the European Union after weeks of intense negotiations.

The cabinet meeting, which started at 14:00 GMT, is over running. Tory Cabinet ministers are currently inside No. 10 for a tense showdown on the draft Brexit deal.

The prime minister told the House of Commons that the Brexit agreement reached by negotiators took the UK "significantly closer to delivering on what the British people voted for in the referendum."

The meeting came after the prime minister called the cabinet members one by one into 10 Downing Street for their first look at the draft agreement, which sets out terms for Britain to leave the European Union in March next year.

The Tuesday announcement that a draft text had been agreed was met with open hostility from Tory Brexiteers and May's Democratic Unionist Party allies, a political party in Northern Ireland which props up May's Tory government at Westminster, and scepticism from Remain supporters.
