3x3 basketball FISU World University League Finals kicks off in Xiamen

XIAMEN, China, Nov. 15 (Xinhua) -- The fourth edition of the FISU 3x3 World University League Finals kicked off on Thursday at Huaqiao University, which is located here in southeastern China's Fujian province.

The tournament, which featured world's top 32 3x3 university basketball teams from 24 countries and regions, has been scheduled for four days, as the 16 teams in the men's and women's fields have been divided into four pools to play a round robin through Day 1 and 2.

Day 3 will see the last 16 and the fourth and final day on Nov. 18 will be a bonanza for basketball fans with quarterfinals, semifinals and final all taking place one after the other one.

Zheng Yi, a player of Huaqiao University's team, said the event provided them a chance to communicate with other students around the world.

"We have prepared a lot for the match, including physical training and tactics practice. We hope we will have good result this time," Zheng said.

Huaqiao University has been hosting the games for four consecutive years. Paulo Ferreira, FISU official, said that Xiamen was a nice city and Huaqiao University had done a great job in hosting the tournament.

In FISU's 2017 Annual Festival, this tournament has been named the "the Best Promotion Program".

3x3 basketball is a growing format of basketball all over the world, especially among young generations. It is also an Olympic sport now and will make its debut in Tokyo 2020.
