TUNIS, Nov. 15 (Xinhua) -- The first International Journalism Conference kicked off Thursday in Tunis, with the theme of "A Citizen-Friendly Journalism."

This three-day-event brings together about 500 journalists from 30 countries.

"We wanted to show, through this event, that the press is now free in Tunisia and that it is the best place to discuss the problems of the press and journalists," Tunisian Prime Minister Youssef Chahed said at the opening ceremony.

Tunis will spare no effort to improve the conditions of journalists and to create a better environment for them, Chahed said.

The event will include workshops and debates on various topics related to the press and the media around the world.
