DAR ES SALAAM, Nov. 16 (Xinhua) -- Tanzanian police killed seven suspected armed robbers on Friday in Mwanza city on the southern shores of Lake Victoria.

Jonathan Shanna, Mwanza regional police commander, said the gangsters were killed during a fierce exchange of fire at Kishiri ward in Nyamagana district.

Shanna said one police officer was injured during the fire exchange, adding that the officer was rushed to hospital for treatment.

Shanna added that the police also seized two firearms and 77 rounds of ammunition used by the armed suspects.

He said the gangsters were involved in armed robberies in areas including Bukombe, Chato, Geita and Bunda in northwestern Tanzania, wreaking havoc to residents in the area.

John Mongella, the Mwanza regional commissioner and chairman of the region's defense and security committee, praised the police for their action to confront the suspects.

The regional commissioner also urged people to work closely with the police in unearthing criminals across the nation.
