NICOSIA, Nov. 19 (Xinhua) -- Over 4,000 people formed a 4 kilometer chain to transfer the last batch of more than half a million books of a university library in Nicosia on Monday.

The human chain transferred hand by hand the last 600 books of the state University of Cyprus from its old library to a new one at a new campus on the outskirts of the capital Nicosia.

"The idea was to involve as many people as possible in a bid to publicize the new library, the most modern in Cyprus and we believe one of the best in the world, so as to get people interested in reading," Rector Constantinos Christofides said.

The first of the 600 books left the old building at 3 p.m. local time, and the last one reached the new library building one hour later.

"This is the biggest library in Cyprus and is also linked online with all other libraries of the island," said Christofides.

He added that the library has the capacity of sitting 1,700 readers simultaneously and will be open most of the time for 16 hours a day and at periods for 24 hours during exams.
