WASHINGTON, Nov. 20 (Xinhua) -- U.S. Treasury said on Tuesday it has slapped sanctions on nine targets related to an Iran-Russia network which it claimed provided oil for Syria and funded Hamas and Hezbollah.
The Treasury said in a statement that it blacklisted six individuals and three entities in the action, including a Syrian national and his Russia-based company and senior officials from the Central Bank of Iran.
The Treasury claimed that the Iran authorities, working with Russian companies, used the network to provide "millions of barrels of oil" to the Syrian government, which in turn "facilitates the movement of hundreds of millions of U.S. dollars to the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps-Qods Force (IRGC-QF) for onward transfer to HAMAS (Hamas) and Hizballah (Hezbollah)."
U.S. sanctions prohibit material support to the Syrian government and U.S.-designated terrorist groups, including the IRGC-QF, Hamas, and Hezbollah, according to the statement.
All property and interests in property of those sanctioned targets that were subject to U.S. jurisdiction would be blocked, and U.S. persons were generally prohibited from engaging in transactions with them.
Washington has intensified its sanctions against Iran after President Donald Trump's decision to exit the Iran nuclear deal in May, a move that has been criticized widely by the international community.
Iranian defense minister said Tuesday that the U.S. sanctions have failed to slow down Iran's progress and the Islamic republic will manage to weather the pressures soon.
