SYDNEY, Nov. 24 (Xinhua) -- Authorities closed a popular beach in Western Australia on Saturday after swimmers spotted a shark in the safety zone.

It is the latest encounter with the marine predators amid renewed concerns about their attacks on humans.

Police ordered swimmers out of the water at Middleton Beach, Albany, after a shark up to 2 meters long was found within the safety net area, according to local media.

No one could really believe it, that there was a shark inside. People were in disbelief, paddleboarder Paul Hepworth was quoted by the ABC news channel as saying.

The shark, believed to be a bronze whaler, was removed from the enclosure and possibly entered the zone through a hole in the net, according to local authorities.

The latest incident comes as state authorities ramp up measures to prevent shark attacks, including laying advanced non-lethal drumline traps initially stretching more than 10 km along the coast.

Recent shark attacks at popular coastal spots across the country have left at least one dead and three others severely injured, including a Western Australian Pyramids Beach surfer who suffered traumatic leg injuries earlier this month.
