ALGIERS, Dec. 2 (Xinhua) -- Algerian Defense Ministry on Sunday said in a statement that two terrorists were shot dead, two were arrested and nine surrendered to military authorities last month in Algeria.

The statement said that during the same period, another 26 individuals suspected of providing support to terrorist groups were also arrested.

Counterterrorism troops also discovered and destructed 47 terrorist warehouses full of war weapons and ammunition, and explosive devices manufacturing workshops.

Algeria has deployed tens of thousands of troops on the southern and eastern borderline, in a bid to thwart the intrusion of terrorists and arms, amid instability in Mali and civil war hitting Libya.

The North African nation has also opened safe routes along its southern border, to encourage Algerian militants who joined terror groups in the Sahel region to lay down arms, in exchange for fair trials.

Also, and as part of the fight against illegal immigration, army troops arrested last month as many as 334 individuals of different African nationalities, while coastguards managed to save the lives of four illegal immigrants off the sea and prevented 650 people from illegally sailing to European shores.

Algeria said its border guards thwart every year 40,000 potential illegal immigrants from reaching Europe, as part of the North African nation's efforts in countering illegal immigration.
