KABUL, Dec. 7 (Xinhua) -- The Afghan Independent Election Commission (IEC) has rejected a decision by the country's electoral watchdog declaring all votes cast during the parliamentary elections in Kabul constituency as invalid, local media reported Friday.

"The IEC has announced that the decision by the Electoral Complaints Commission (ECC) to invalidate Kabul province votes is political, hasty and illegal," reported Tolo News TV.

On Thursday, ECC officials declared votes as invalid in national capital Kabul and surrounding districts, saying reports of widespread fraud and vote rigging as well as irregularities led to the decision.

About 2,767 complaints were registered in Kabul after the polls.

The long-delayed elections for Wolesi Jirga or lower house of the Afghan national parliament were held on Oct. 20, with more than 2,500 candidates vying for the chamber's 249 seats.

Nearly 800 candidates contested for 33 seats allocated for Kabul.

IEC has announced the preliminary results of many of the constituencies so far except the results from Kabul amid allegation of fraud and irregularities.

However, local media reports said that IEC will announce the preliminary election results from Kabul soon.
