Indian gov't appoints new chief economic adviser

NEW DELHI, Dec. 7 (Xinhua) -- The Indian government on Friday appointed Krishnamurthy Subramanian as the country's new chief economic adviser (CEA), officials said.

Subramanian is an expert in banking, corporate governance and economic policy and has a PhD from the University of Chicago. Subramanian used to work as a member of expert committees for the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) and Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI). He was an associate professor at the Indian School of Business (ISB) in Hyderabad before the appointment.

"The appointments committee of the cabinet (ACC) has approved the proposal for the appointment of Krishnamurthy Subramanian, Associate Professor and Executive Director, Centre for Analytical Finance ED(CAF), ISB, Hyderabad, to the post of Chief Economic Adviser," an official quoting a government press release said.

Subramanian is given a three-year tenure as the chief economic adviser.

The position of CEA has been lying vacant for the last five months, following the resignation of economist Arvind Subramanian in June.
