DAMASCUS, Dec. 7 (Xinhua) -- The railways linking capital Damascus in the south with the northern Aleppo city, the economic capital of Syria, are under repairing, state news agency SANA reported on Friday.
Repairing the railways between Syria's most important cities of Aleppo and Damascus will enable cargo trains to travel back and forth between the two cities, said the report, quoting Najib Fares, head of the general establishment of Syria's railways.
Additionally, fixing the railways will also help in delivering fuel to electricity stations in northern and southern Syria, as well as grain to grain silos in the provinces of Damascus, Homs, Hama, and Aleppo, as the railways pass through all of these provinces.
Fares said that the establishment of Syria's railways is implementing a "very important project," which is creating a loading station in Hisyah quarries in central Syria and a sub-railway to help with moving gravel to the provinces of Damascus, Homs, Hama and Aleppo to contribute to the reconstruction process.
The project will be done by mid-2019, Fares added.
SANA said the rehabilitation of the damaged railways in the country is a necessity on the economic and service levels.
