RABAT, Dec. 10 (Xinhua) -- German Chancellor Angela Merkel said Monday in the Moroccan city of Marrakech that the Global Compact for Migration is a "clear commitment to multilateralism."

The stance was made by Merkel at a United Nations conference where over 150 countries formally adopted the Global Compact for Safe, Orderly and Regular Migration.

Praising the adoption, the German chancellor said in her speech that "this compact is about the foundations of international cooperation, and this is why it is well worth our while to fight for the survival of this compact once."

She said that the compact will ensure that many people can get a better life ahead, stressing that only through multilateralism that "we can render this planet a better one."

The Global Compact for Safe, Orderly and Regular Migration was agreed upon by the member states of the United Nations on July 13, 2018.

This document is the first-ever inter-governmentally negotiated agreement to cover all dimensions of international migration in a holistic and comprehensive manner.
