WASHINGTON, Dec. 10 (Xinhua) -- U.S. State Department on Monday announced to forbid former Gambian President Yahya Jammeh and his immediate family members to enter the United States.

In a statement, the State Department said that the decision was made due to Jammeh's "involvement in significant corruption."

Besides Jammeh, his wife, daughter and son would also be prohibited from entering the United States.

Jammeh reportedly purchased a mansion in the U.S. state of Maryland.

Jammeh, who took power in 1994 after a coup d'etat, was defeated in the presidential election in 2016 by opposition candidate Adama Barrow.

In October, Barrow presided over the swearing in of 11 commissioners to fill the Truth, Reconciliation and Reparations Commission (TRRC), which is set up to investigate the human rights atrocities perpetrated under the Jammeh regime.
