BEIJING, Dec. 12 (Xinhua) -- Despite continued thin trading, Chinese stocks closed higher on Wednesday in part due to strong performance in sectors including beer brewing and auto parts production.

The benchmark Shanghai Composite Index climbed 0.31 percent, closing at 2,602.15, and the Shenzhen Component Index closed 0.16 percent higher at 7,698.02.

Trading volume remained lackluster as combined turnover on the two bourses stood at 222.65 billion yuan (32.27 billion U.S. dollars), slightly higher than Tuesday.

The NASDAQ-style ChiNext Index inched up 0.05 percent to close at 1,338.73.

Most listed breweries gained, with Guangzhou Zhujiang Brewery Co. Ltd. up by the 10-percent daily limit to 5.08 yuan. Companies in sectors including auto manufacturing and home appliances were also among the big winners.

Telecommunications and other 5G-related sectors, which rallied Tuesday on good prospects, retreated Wednesday.
