Chinese stocks close higher Thursday

BEIJING, Dec. 13 (Xinhua) -- Chinese stocks continued to close higher on Thursday, with strong performances from household appliances and furniture shares.

The benchmark Shanghai Composite Index went up 1.23 percent to 2,634.05 points, while the Shenzhen Component Index closed 1.43 percent higher at 7,808.04 points.

The combined turnover on the two bourses stood at 304.83 billion yuan (about 44.4 billion U.S. dollars), rising from 222.65 billion yuan the previous trading day.

Most household appliances and furniture shares gained, with their sub-indexes climbing 4.02 percent and 2.78 percent, respectively.

Hangzhou Robam Appliances Co., Ltd., China's leading household electrical kitchen appliances producer, surged by the daily limit of 10 percent to close at 23.17 yuan per share. Midea Group Co., Ltd., a home appliance manufacturer, climbed 6.31 percent to end at 40.12 yuan per share.

Companies in sectors including cement and building materials were also among the big gainers. Xinjiang Qingsong Building Materials and Chemicals (Group) Co., Ltd. rose 5.11 percent to 3.29 yuan, while Chengdu Road and Bridge Engineering Co., Ltd. rose by the 10-percent daily limit to 5.26 yuan.

The ChiNext Index, China's NASDAQ-style board of growth enterprises, was up 0.73 percent to close at 1,348.5 points.
