Sudanese police arrests cell manufacturing firebombs in Khartoum: report

KHARTOUM, Dec. 28 (Xinhua) -- Sudanese police on Friday announced arrest of a cell manufacturing firebombs in the capital Khartoum, official SUNA news agency reported.

"The police today, based on reports received from some citizens in East Nile locality, and with a careful follow-up by its organs, managed to control a cell that manufactures firebombs," Hashim Abdel-Rahim, Sudanese police spokesman, was quoted in the report as saying.

"The cell was working to distribute the firebombs in all localities of Khartoum by a saloon vehicle allotted for this purpose," he added.

He explained that the police forces raided an apartment in East Nile locality and found 47 firebombs ready for use and others in preparation process along with a large quantity of empty bottles ready for packing, two laptops and two mobile devices.

Since Dec. 19, various areas in Sudan, including Khartoum, have been witnessing popular protests over the deteriorating economic conditions and price hikes of basic commodities.

On Thursday, the Sudanese government announced that 19 people have been killed during the popular protests which the country has been witnessing over the past week and that 187 members of the regular forces and 219 civilians were wounded.
