KAMPALA, Jan. 1 (Xinhua) -- Uganda has recorded a trade surplus of 2.3 billion U.S. dollars for the first time in recent years, with 3.9 billion dollars of goods and services exported to the east, south and west African area in 2018, the country's president Yoweri Museveni said Monday.

Uganda's foreign exchange earnings in the financial year 2017-2018 stood at about 6.6 billion dollars, while 7.7 billion dollars were spent on imports of goods and services. With numerous new factories being commissioned, the earnings will grow, the president said.

Uganda's exports in regional trade include steel and steel products, dairy products, beverages, electronics, grains (maize, millet, rice, beans), fruits and vegetables, spices, coffee, tea, sugar and confectionery, and plastic products.
