ABUJA, Jan. 4 (Xinhua) -- Nigeria's army on Friday confirmed that six Boko Haram fighters were killed in an operation aimed at routing remnants of the terror group in the country's northeast region.

The terrorists were killed as troops destroyed their hideouts at Gawa and Boskoro villages in the northern state of Borno on Thursday, according to a statement reaching Xinhua in Abuja.

Three women, suspected to have been Boko Haram hostages, were rescued in Boskoro, the army said.

The rescued women have been taken to an internally displaced persons' camp in Borno.

Boko Haram has been trying since 2009 to establish an Islamic state in northeastern Nigeria, killing some 20,000 people and forcing displacement of millions of others.
