LAGOS, Jan. 7 (Xinhua) -- Nigerian troops operating in the restive northeast region have destroyed some Boko Haram gun trucks in airstrikes conducted near Damasak area of Borno state, an air force official said Monday.

Ibikunle Daramola, spokesperson for the Nigerian Air Force (NAF), confirmed the destruction of the gun trucks, saying the operation was carried out to get rid of some terrorists who had attempted to breach ground troops location.

He said the NAF Mi-35M helicopters engaged the group of terrorists' gun trucks in successive waves of attacks as they retreated, destroying and immobilizing three of them while causing significant damage to others and neutralizing several terrorists.

Boko Haram has been trying since 2009 to establish an Islamic state in northeastern Nigeria, killing some 20,000 people and forcing displacement of millions of others.
