-- A South African court ruled on Wednesday that the detention of Mozambique's former finance minister Manuel Chang over 2 billion U.S. dollars of fraudulent loans was legal.
Lawyers for Chang, who was arrested in South Africa on December 29, argued in court that his detention was illegal because a request for extradition had not yet been received. (Independent Online)
-- As riot police took up position outside the electoral commission headquarters in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) on Wednesday, South African President Cyril Ramaphosa and his Zambian counterpart Edgar Lungu urged the commission to speedily release the result of the presidential vote to maintain stability.
