Canadian stock market rises for fifth straight day

OTTAWA, Jan. 10 (Xinhua) -- Canada's main stock market continued rising Monday, for a fifth straight session, due to gains in energy and health-care sectors.

The Toronto Stock Exchange's benchmark Standard & Poor's/TSX Composite Index rose 77.51 points, or 0.54 percent, to finish the day at 14,504.13 points.

The Canadian dollar dropped 0.14 cents to 0.7555 U.S. dollar.

On the market, a total of 168 issues rose while 68 fell. There were 1 new high and 1 new low, with total volume of 251.8 million shares.

The energy group rose 0.18 points, or 0.12 percent, while the financial sector edged up 0.01 points.

Suncor rose eight cents to 40.64 Canadian dollars while Canadian Natural Resources gained 51 cents to 35.60 Canadian dollars.

Hydro One inched up six cents to 20.69 Canadian dollars while Fortis strengthened 48 cents to 45.43 Canadian dollars.
