ACCRA, Jan. 11 (Xinhua) -- Eight people were confirmed dead and at least five others injured when a truck and a mini bus collided in southern Ghana early Friday, local media reported here.

According to eye witnesses, a Mercedes Benz sprinter mini bus collided with an articulated truck at Boankra, near the city of Kumasi, 280 km north of the capital.

Ashanti Regional Commander of the Police Motor Traffic and Transport Division (MTTD) Chief Supt. Frank Abrokwah, who spoke to local media, said the driver of the mini bus lost control of his vehicle after overtaking another bus on the wrong side of the lane at a portion of the road with speed rumps.

"He lost control of the steering wheel and ran into the lane of the oncoming truck and crashed into it," the police officer explained.

In an attempt to avoid the mini bus, the truck veered off its lane and ran into a house, causing extensive damages to the house, he said.

The injured were rushed to the Ejisu Government Hospital for treatment. Enditem
