YEREVAN, Jan. 14 (Xinhua) -- Ararat Mirzoyan, the sole candidate from the ruling My Step Alliance, was elected speaker of the Armenian parliament on Monday.
Mirzoyan received 131 of the 132 votes during the first session of the parliament, with one ballot invalid, according to the parliament, also known as the National Assembly.
Mirzoyan has served as first deputy prime minister of the country since May 2018.
Earlier on Monday, acting Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan was appointed as Armenian prime minister by President Armen Sarkissian after the ruling My Step Alliance nominated him as the candidate. Pashinyan must form a government within 15 days following the appointment.
