CAIRO, Jan. 14 (Xinhua) -- Egypt's Ministry of Petroleum said on Monday that six Mediterranean countries agreed to establish the Eastern Mediterranean Gas Forum (EMGF) with Cairo as its headquarters.

"The oil ministers of Cyprus, Greece, Israel, Italy, Jordan, Palestine and Egypt discussed the establishment of EMGF and Cairo was chosen as the base of the forum," the ministry said in a statement.

It attributed the choice of Egypt to the large gas discoveries in the sea fields in the region which would have very important impact on developing the energy and economic development in the region.

The six countries' oil ministers stressed that those new discoveries will influence the energy security in the region, according to the statement.

They agreed to establish a regional gas market that serves the interests of member states by securing the supply and demand, and developing the infrastructure in member states and providing competitive prices, it added.
