Chinese American woman lawyer sworn in as NYC civil court judge

NEW YORK, Jan. 15 (Xinhua) -- Wendy Li, an immigrant from China, was sworn in as new judge of the New York City Civil Court on Tuesday.

Over 200 city councilors, judges, lawyers and Chinese community representatives filled a courtroom on the third floor of the city civil court Tuesday evening to witness the inauguration ceremony of Li, who was elected to the office on Nov. 6, 2018.

Li immigrated from the Sichuan province in China to the United States when she was 28 after obtaining a law degree from Beijing University. She later graduated with degrees from Southern Methodist University, Oxford and Harvard.

Li spent 18 years as a corporate lawyer focusing on banking, administrative proceedings, capital markets, mergers and acquisitions, litigation and international arbitration, private-equity funds and real estate.
